NEW LABOUR AND THE WAR AGAINST NAZISM

punishingputin

The recent decision by many Western leaders, including Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and David Cameron, to boycott the Russian commemoration on 9th May of the 70th anniversary of the defeat of Nazism, is an utter disgrace and a grievous and inexcusable insult to the Russian people, whose courage and enormous sacrifice was the decisive factor in the defeat of Nazism.

The reason for this boycott is, of course, no mystery. It is clearly a collective snub intended to further demonise the current Russian leadership, and especially Mr Putin himself, over the perceived attempt to destabilise Ukraine via clandestine Russian support for the pro-Russian rebels in the war-torn west of Ukraine. However, whatever the current Western quarrel with the Russian leadership, this in no way justifies such a gross and inexcusable insult to the Russian people whose immense sacrifice in the 2nd World War must never be forgotten.

Likewise the longstanding, and largely successful, attempt to rewrite history by marginalising the decisive role of the Soviet Union and the Russian people in the defeat of Nazism has never been any more than a despicable, although largely successful, example of Western anti-Russian propaganda. Most British and American citizens have grown used to, and rarely question, the comfortable and self aggrandising myth that it was the Anglo/American invasion of Normandy, and the subsequent defeat of German forces in Western Europe, that led to the defeat of Nazism.

Here are some of the facts:

The siege of Leningrad by the Nazis, lasted for 872 days, from 1941 to 1944, caused the greatest destruction and largest loss of life ever known in a modern city and cost the lives of one and a half million Russians, most of whom were civilans who starved and froze to death during the siege.

The Battle of Stalingrad from August 1942 until February 1943 was the biggest single defeat inflicted on the German forces in WW2. Russian forces succeeded in surrounding the Nazis, to whom the city of Stalingrad had already fallen. The ensuing battle is widely recognised as the bloodiest in the history of warfare. The heavy losses inflicted on the German Wehrmacht made it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war and the attrition inflicted on the German forces ultimately enabled the allied victory over Nazi Germany. Unfortunately Stalingrad too required a huge sacrifice by the Russian people and it is estimated that the total loss of life was about two million (this includes casualty figures from both sides)

The Battle of Kursk, in July and August 1943, was the biggest tank battle in history, in which russian T-34 tanks took on the might of the Nazi panzer divisions, including their new and hitherto impregnable Tiger tanks. Neither side could secure victory in this battle, but were it not for the attrition inflicted on the German forces, and particularly on their panzer divisions, by wave after wave of Russian T-34’s, the invasion of Normandy and the subsequent defeat of the German forces on the western front might never have been possible.

It has been estimated that between twenty six and thirty million Russians perished in the war. The world therefore owes a huge debt of gratitude to the Russian people which can never be repaid.

http://rt.com/news/257145-immortal-regiment-ww2-worldwide/?amp;amp

The highlight of the Russian commemoration on 9th April was the deeply moving ‘March of the Immortal Regiment’, repeated in towns and cities across the whole of Russia, and this year, on a smaller scale, in many other countries. The ‘March of the Immortal Regiment’ involved millions 0f civilians, of all ages, who marched together carrying portraits of family members – fathers, mothers, grandparents – who had fought and died in what is known in Russia as ‘The Great Patriotic War’.

This part of the commemoration was largely ignored by western television channels whose coverage concentrated exclusively on the spectacular military parade and flypast that immediately preceded it. As usual it would seem that the main interest of the western media was in depicting, for propaganda purposes, the spectacle (and the potential threat) of Russian militarism.

This brings us back to the pointedly enigmatic title of today’s blog. What has New Labour got to do with the struggle against fascism, and with the defeat of Nazism? The answer, of course, is absolutely nothing!

However, that is not to say that the British Labour Party has never had any relationship to the political idealism that inspired the Russian forces and the Russian people in WW2 to such great acts of heroism and self-sacrifice. On the contrary the original British Labour Party was directly inspired by the works of Karl Marx and by the attempt, via the Russian Revolution of 1917, to create a truly egalitarian socialist state. The socialist constitution of the British Labour Party, its’ first formal constitution, was agreed in 1918, the year after the Russian Revolution.

In recent years what has come to be known as ‘New Labour’ has completely abandoned the socialist principles on which the Labour Party was originally founded in an attempt to ‘steal the Tories clothes’, and has become a mere clone of the Conservative Party, with few significant ideological differences. New Labour has moved so far to the right, in a cynical attempt to win middle class votes, that they have become almost indistinguishable from the Tories. In doing so they have completely betrayed the British working class, including the unemployed, the long-term unemployed, and the so-called unemployable, whose interests the Labour Party was founded to represent, but who are now represented by no political party of any consequence, both Labour and the Conservatives having adopted punitive reactionary and vindictive policies and attitudes which virtually criminalize the working class, and the poor in general. These days it is virtually a crime to be poor.

The consequent lack of any real identity that would distinguish them from the Tories has led to a deep cynicism and distrust of New Labour which has certainly contributed greatly to their defeat in the recent general election. Furthermore, in attempting to explain this defeat it has become commonplace for media pundits to pronounce that no party of the left can be elected in the UK.

How can this be so? Are not the working class the majority of the population? Should it not be possible for a truly and passionately socialist party to inspire and motivate the majority population to support them in massive numbers? By the way, if the word ‘socialist’ offends you, try substituting the word ‘humanist’ instead, because that’s what we’re really talking about, not the linguistics, nor the party slogans or propaganda.

It is vital that we realise that the so-called independent news media, to which we are routinely and constantly exposed, transmits, and has always transmitted, a powerful narrative of anti-Russian, anti communist, and anti-marxist propaganda which has profound effects on our perceptions and prejudices of world events, and of other cultures, in ways that we can rarely appreciate fully, if at all. When media pundits on the BBC and elsewhere admonish us that a party of the left is unelectable in the UK we do not have to believe them. If we believe them then we can say goodbye to any chance of the fundamental change we so desperately need to achieve real social justice and egalitarianism in this society.

The Noose Of “Regeneration” Tightens Around Lancaster West

Rock

Back in the summer of 2011 members of the Grenfell Action Group first stumbled across concrete evidence that the Council was making plans to “socially cleanse” RBKC of it’s poor and excluded residents. It was at this time that Councillor Coleridge sanctioned a “Decant Policy” to apply to tenants and leaseholders on housing estates facing regeneration that explicitly removed the “guarantee” that they could return to their existing communities in the event of being decanted during construction works.

This immoral and fascist “Decant Policy” allows RBKC the legal right to move people to Manchester, Peterborough, Slough, or anywhere they choose and anyone who refuses a tenancy in an area outside of London will be deemed “intentionally homeless” and the RBKC duty to house them will be voided.

When members of the Grenfell Action Group confronted the RBKC Council about the removal of the “guarantee” that decanted residents could return to their communities we were told that we would have to rely on the “word” of RBKC Councillors that this would not happen. Unfortunately, even the dogs in the street know that the promises of RBKC Councillors are worth nothing as evidenced by the lies and deceit foisted on the Lancaster West community in relation to the closure of Station Walk.

When we began whistle-blowing about RBKC plans to apply a scorched earth policy to social housing in North Kensington we were ruthlessly stamped on by the neo-cons at Hornton Street who fear nothing more than having their heartless and money grabbing plans exposed to the wider public. This also brings great shame on the RBKC Labour party who accused us of “scaremongering” when we tried to warn our community about the imminent threat of “social cleansing” and the managed decline of Lancaster West Estate.

Over the past week more evidence has surfaced that indicates that the Grenfell Action Group has been completely vindicated in our assertion that social housing tenants in RBKC are in for a very rough ride and that those facing homelessness in RBKC will be ruthlessly treated as we predicted.

The following comment appeared on the Hornet’s Nest website and it is the considered opinion of the Grenfell Action Group that it was most likely posted anonymously by a Labour Councillor on 5th May :

“The new Private Rented Sector Offer (PRSO) will be applied to every new homeless household for whom the Council becomes responsible. This means paying private rented sector landlords to offer temporary accommodation to these households outside the borough, for a period of two years (including very probably a “sweetener” on top of the rent). After two years the household can be evicted into homelessness – but will then be the responsibility of the borough where they are living. This policy explicitly states that “eventually the majority of households owed the full duty will have that duty ended with a PRS offer”. Furthermore, the Council has instructed its agent the TMO not to bring empty properties up to standard for re-letting on the estates that are ear-marked for imminent “regeneration” plans. These include Balfour Burleigh, parts of Silchester Estate and the “finger blocks” on Lancaster West. All other Council-owned properties that become void will either be sold on the open market or let at a market rent and won’t be allocated to homeless families”.

The above observations show the full horror of RBKC Council’s intentions to rid the Rotten Borough of anyone living in social housing or facing the terrifying prospect of homelessness. The RBKC Councillors and Officers who are responsible for implementing these fascist and immoral policies should be deeply ashamed of themselves and can rest assured that their evil actions will not go un-responded to. As we know that we can’t rely on the useless RBKC Labour Party to offer any effective resistance it looks like residents and local community groups will have to lead the way!

Stay posted for a forthcoming announcement…….

SUNLIGHT IS THE BEST DISINFECTANT

LapDog2

What the neo-cons in Hornton Street really fear:

Members of the Grenfell Action Group have understood for a long time that the one thing that RBKC Tories fear more than anything is that their immoral and contemptible treatment of the poor and excluded in this most Rotten Borough is exposed to the wider public.

RBKC Council loves nothing more than keeping issues like Councillor Feilding Mellen’s fascist policy for the social cleansing of North Kensington “in house” and these evil and in-human plans hidden away from of the knowledge of the local community, the general public and the wider Press.

No one from the RBKC Council can justify “social cleansing” all they can do is ensure that it’s whistle-blowers are suppressed.

As a consequence, we believe the most effective way of challenging the twisted ideology of the perverted “neo-cons” in Hornton Street is by exposing their heartless policies to all and sundry and explicitly holding them to account. We believe that this can be achieved by mass leafleting, use of existing communication networks and by the use of social media and robust protest and direct action.

RBKC Labour and the art of silent collusion:

It is the conviction of the Grenfell Action Group that it is the function of our RBKC Labour Councillors who have the resources and access to the Hornton Street grapevine to highlight the ill-treatment of our communities but, instead, it seems that they often collude in keeping such matters hidden. Recent examples of this can be found in RBKC Labour’s handling of pollution concerns at the Westway Sports pitches, lack of resistance to recent changes in RBKC housing policy and a complete failure to notify the Ladbroke Grove community of the threats associated with the Westway Development Trust.  If the true maxim of openness can be summed up in the statement “sunlight is the best disinfectant” then it appears that the RBKC Labour Group would do well to come out of the shade, reconsider their priorities and make their minds up where their true responsibility lies – ie with their constituents in the North Kensington ghetto, rather than with the neo-cons at the Town Hall, with whom they appear to have a far too cosy relationship.

Are RBKC Labour simply playing the Tories game?

Sadly, we have come to understand that Councillors from the RBKC Labour Group far too often collude to assist their Tory masters by ensuring that matters the tories wish to suppress remain suppressed and ensure that no one rocks the boat at the cosy little social club in the Town Hall.

In more recent times, the “neo-cons” at RBKC have made it their buisness to keep the loss of Maxilla Children’s Centre and the Westway Stables debacle under wraps and, likewise, the problems of the travellers community next door at Stable Way. This goes along with the neglect of various North Kensington social housing estates which the Tories would prefer to keep out of the media and away from public discussion and debate.

We therefore repeat our previous concerns to the North Kensington community that the RBKC Labour Group do not do nearly enough to publicise these issues and the plight of the affected communities.

It would seem that the RBKC Labour Group simply do not want to upset the Ruling Party in Hornton Street, possibly out of fear of them.  But for whatever reason, suppression of information seems to be the main game in Hornton Street. This is doing a gross disservice to local  residents and, if we are not careful, there will be nothing left in North Kensington worth fighting for, and that includes Maxilla Children’s Centre, the stables, the travellers community and our own homes, whether at Lancaster West or elsewhere in the borough!

The TMO Tried To Bury Us – They Didn’t Realise That We Are Seeds!

imgresUpdate from ‘Grenfell Community Unite’

Despite the best efforts of the TMO and the warped thinking of their Resident Engagement Team, the newly formed residents group “Grenfell Community Unite” goes from strength to strength with new members joining all the time.

This blog will deliver an update on what has been happening recently to the tenants, leaseholders and renters in Grenfell Tower and how we are still being denied a “collective voice” and having our legitimate concerns ignored by those with power at RBKC and our highly abusive landlord, the TMO.

On 17/03/15 up to 100 Grenfell Tower residents met in the Community Rooms for an “Emergency Meeting” to discuss our concerns regarding the Grenfell Tower Improvement Works.

On 26/03/15 representatives from over 20 households in Grenfell Tower met and agreed to form “Grenfell Community Unite” as a collective voice for residents’ concerns.

On 06/04/15 “Grenfell Communty Unite” wrote to TMO/Rydon to request a Public Meeting with Grenfell Tower tenants, leaseholders and renters to discuss our concerns.

On 08/04/15 the TMO Resident Engagement Team made it clear that they would not support collective “resident engagement” in Grenfell Tower despite an earlier assurance from September 2014 that residents would be allowed to form a group to represent our concerns (see below email from Janet Edwards):

From: jedwards@kctmo.org.uk
CC: TComplaints@kctmo.org.uk; fkafidiya@kctmo.org.uk
Subject: RE: Resident representation.
Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2014 15:33:09 +0000

Dear **************

I would confirm that the TMO has no objection to the tenants and leaseholders of Grenfell Tower forming a Grenfell Tower Improvement Works Resident Group, and I would advise that this Group will be consulted by the TMO on matters relating to the Grenfell Tower building works. Indeed, the TMO has no objection to any residents wishing to form a resident group for purposes of consultation.

I would also confirm that we are still working with the Lancaster West RA which represents all residents on the Lancaster West estate.

Janet Edwards

Head of Resident Engagement

Despite this we received On 17th April the email below from the TMO contradicting the earlier agreement to acknowledge our right to form a collective and refusing to meet with us to discuss our common concerns:

From: Claire Williams (clwilliams@kctmo.org.uk)

Dear ******************

Thank you for your email of 6 April; that included the minutes of a meeting held by residents on 17 March 2015.

In your email you have raised a number of points which I have addressed below. Firstly you have raised the lack of consultation from TMO/Rydon. To clarify, there have been a number of communication channels used by the TMO and Rydon’s since works began on site. This includes:

· Face to face communication

· Emails

· Individual letters hand delivered

· Monthly newsletters

· Posters placed near lifts and noticeboards

· Formal meetings held in the early evening

· Drop in sessions (morning, afternoon and early evening) at 145 Grenfell Tower and the walkway entrance

· Door knocking to notify of specific event(s)

· Home visits and surveys

· Individual consultation with residents prior to works beginning in their flats

· Bulk text messaging

· The TMO are also due to offer resident surgeries by appointment, starting in May

As background information, I note that the TMO did a consultation survey over December 2013/January 2014 to review the consultation strategy. Over 50% of households attended the drop- in session so this gave a reasonable picture of preferences. Overall most people preferred individual newsletters, letters, notices etc rather than public meetings.

In terms of a public meeting you are proposing, the main topic seems to be over the location of the HIU (heat interface units) within the flats. The TMO takes the view that every resident will have a particular layout within their home and have different needs based on their circumstances. Therefore individual household discussion is more appropriate. On this basis the consultation by Rydon is addressing specific issues and looking at how they can be accommodated.

The TMO had issued an FAQ on heating and hot water that many residents have been given/picked up at our drop in sessions, so this could be perhaps rolled out more widely if there are new issues arising. It may be that if you have identified further questions that these could be included, and then put into a larger ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ (FAQ) format, for putting on the TMO website, under the Grenfell banner. I will be looking to do this anyway in the light of your comments, but please let me know if you have a list of questions that you feel have not been covered previously.

You raise concerns regarding standard of works in communal lobbies and inside individual flats. All residents have been informed that the works currently undertaken are not the finished article, as boxing is yet to be fitted to conceal pipework. Once the works have been tested/commissioned to ensure there are no leaks or any other issues, boxing and decoration will then be completed. I am aware that some literature from the resident group has been misleading on this, as incomplete works have been portrayed as being finished. I would expect this to be rectified in any future communications.

The TMO employ a mechanical and electrical consultant who is responsible for the specification of works and who carries out monthly inspections. We also have two clerks of works who regularly inspect the quality of works and address health and safety concerns on site. Please see the February 2015 newsletter for their details.

In regards to the use of lifts, Rydon workers are not allowed to use the lift during peak hours, ie school drop off and pick up times each day. They are also due to use only the ‘protected’ lift for materials. If residents find this is not being adhered to, they can either ring/email myself or contact the Rydon RLO. All the Rydon workers have vests with a number on it, so any infringement should include the details the worker involved. I have been made aware of one incident where a resident complained over lift use, and this has been formally taken up with Rydon.

In your email you ask whether the TMO would acknowledge the Grenfell Community Unite group as a representative voice of leaseholders and tenants. I am advised that this group will not be recognised by the TMO, as there is a Residents Association already in existence.

The TMO are currently working with the existing Lancaster West Residents Association, and are currently making arrangements with them to hold an AGM. There was communication with Mr ***** in early 2014 relating to forming an alternative residents’ group.

I note that the TMO have no formal relationship with leaseholders’ tenants.

The TMO has been engaging with residents to understand their specific requirements since 2012, and inevitably some issues change and move from the original feasibility that was first shown to the final scheme which is on site now. Rydon have now been on site for nearly 10 months and are building up more knowledge and understanding of residents’ requirements. The TMO and Rydon will continue to work with residents to meet their individual needs.

On this basis, I would like to offer Mr ***** a chance to meet Rydon to discuss the layout of his flat and the heating and hot water layout. If this is of interest, then can a couple of dates within the working week be proposed?

Please let me know if you have a list of questions relating to the works that you would want responded to in the newsletter or on the TMO website.

Regards

Claire Williams

Project Manager

THE ABOVE RESPONSE FROM CLAIRE WILLIAMS TREATS THE RESIDENTS OF GRENFELL TOWER WITH COMPLETE CONTEMPT. ‘GRENFELL COMMUNITY UNITE’ HAVE GENUINE CONCERNS REGARDING THE QUALITY OF WORKS BEING DELIVERED BY RYDON AND DEMAND THE RIGHT TO COMMUNICATE OUR CONCERNS COLLECTIVELY.

MS WILLIAMS REFERS TO AN ONGOING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TMO AND THE LANCASTER WEST RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION, WHICH SUPPOSEDLY REPRESENTS ALL RESIDENTS OF THIS ESTATE. HOWEVER, THERE IS GOOD REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THE ‘RA’ REPRESENTS VERY FEW (IF ANY) LOCAL RESIDENTS, THAT IT HAS BECOME SEVERELY DYSFUNCTIONAL, AND MAY HAVE COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED (JUST AS AS THE EMB DID BEFORE THE TMO DECIDED TO DISSOLVE, RATHER THAN REFORM IT).

IF THIS IS THE CASE THEN WE ARE FACED WITH ANOTHER CLASSIC CASE OF DIVIDE AND RULE IN WHICH THE TMO IS USING ITS DISPROPORTIONATE POWER TO ISOLATE INDIVIDUAL HOUSEHOLDS, IN ORDER TO BULLY OR MANIPULATE THEM INTO AQUIESCENCING WITH THE TMO’S OWN AUTHORITARIAN AGENDA.

HOW IRONIC THAT THIS IS SUPPOSEDLY A ‘TENANT MANAGEMENT ORGANISATION’, THE POINT OF WHICH SHOULD BE TO EMPOWER RESIDENTS AND FACILITATE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE HOUSING MANGEMENT DECISIONS WHICH AFFECT THEM. WHAT A BAD JOKE THAT HAS TURNED OUT TO BE!

SHAME ON THOSE WHO WOULD DENY OUR COMMUNITY THE BASIC RIGHT TO COLLECTIVE REPRESENTATION!

(Respect to Sweets Way for the idea of resistance through the sowing of seeds!)

HOUSING ACTIVISTS DISRUPT PROPERTY AWARDS

Guardian

About 200 housing, anti-gentrification and Occupy campaigners disrupted the beginning of the annual Property Awards on Tuesday evening in London.

Nervous guests arrived in designer clothing and were forced to use side and back entrances as protesters blocked off the main doors to the Park Lane Hotel.

Less mainstream media attention for this action but well worth a look in our judgement – some very nice pictures and, of course, more evidence of the direct action movement on social housing which is spreading like wildfire across London.

Lancaster West residents would do well to sit up and take notice because we are on the list. We’ve known this for several years already. Now is the time for action before it becomes too late to make a difference.
